Madeleine kidnap dominates local news pages as Mercury raises cash

By HoldtheFrontPage staff

The disappearance of Madeleine McCann is continuing to dominate the pages of her home town newspaper four weeks after she was kidnapped, as the Leicester Mercury raises money for the family.

Mercury reporter Paul Conroy spent more than three weeks in Portugal covering the story 'on the ground', only returning to Leicester this week as the story focus widened.

Editor Nick Carter said that even though the way things operated there meant there were no exclusives, it was still important for the paper to have had a presence there.

And he did not rule out a return if the national interest in the story waned.

He told HoldtheFrontPage: "Even without the parents and the intense publicity keeping the story going it would be a huge story for us.

"A four-year-old from our patch has been kidnapped - how big a story can it be?"

Since the story broke on May 4, the story has made the front page of the Mercury 13 times, with at least one page inside every day.

Nick said: "A decision may need to be made later if the national interest wanes as it will still be our story.

"If PA does not have as much as we would want then we will have to work out how we tackle that, and obviously we are in touch with the family over here."

The Mercury itself has also attracted national attention, after it launched green and yellow wristbands, or 'bands of hope', which it is selling to raise money for the McCann family's fighting fund.

Its original order of 10,000 sold out in two days, and it has now bought a further 50,000 as it has received requests for them from across the country.

Nick said readers in the Mercury's patch were a priority, but the paper was now also looking at posting the bands out to people.

They are being sold for a minimum of £1, with all proceeds going to the fund.

Nick said: "We are not recouping our initial outlay. We feel that is the contribution we want to make to the family

About Madeleine

Madeleine McCann was born 4 years ago. She has one brother Sean and a sister Amelie. She lives with her family in Rothley, Leicestershire. Her father comes from Glasgow and has 3 sisters, Patricia, Jacqueline and Phil, and a brother John. Madeleine's Grandmother, Eileen lives in Glasgow. Her other grandparents, Sue and Brian live in Liverpool. Both sides of the family are very close and all are working in different ways to try and help in the search for Madeleine.

Phil, who resides in Ullapool and is a teacher, has asked that the heartfelt thanks of the whole family be passed to everyone who has helped in the search so far. She said "There have been so many messages of support and prayers from people all over the world. We (the family) are overwhelmed with your assistance. The media people have been wonderful and so helpful in making everyone aware of our plight. Madeleine’s family are so grateful to you all. Please keep Madeleine in your thoughts and prayers. We pray that she will be returned to us safe and well."

I saw 'Maddie' in Marrakech: The Sun: DEVASTATED Mari Pollard insisted last night she is 99.9 per cent certain a little girl she saw in Morocco WAS missing Madeleine McCann. Norwegian holidaymaker Mari, 45, became suspicious when the “lost-looking” tot asked a man in a petrol station in Marrakech: “Can I see Mummy soon?”The sighting was ten days ago — and Mari is distraught because she did not realise the significance at the time. Mari, who lives with her British husband in Fuengirola in Spain, explained: “I didn’t know about Maddie’s disappearance then. She saw the girl at around 10am on Wednesday, May 9, at a petrol station next to the Ibis Palmeraie Hotel on the outskirts of Marrakech.Click here to read more

Bring Madeleine Home, Press conference in Rome went very well giving us an excellent forum to ask for help in the search for Madeleine. We told people about the website, how to download posters and ask people to print them and take on holiday wherever they are.
We arrived in Madrid late last night and have a series of meetings arranged with government and non government agencies concerned with child welfare. We will also be hosting a press conference again to raise general awareness of Madeleine´s disappearance and ask for the public´s help in our search for Madeleine. We may also do a few very short interviews for US news stations which are widely broadcast in Europe, N.Africa and Asia, particularly in English speaking hotels and other outlets. Will update after meetings.
